What are weather balloons?

2025-09-08

Weather balloons are commonly used in meteorological observation for low- to medium- and high-altitude observations. Made of latex, they are primarily used for short-term meteorological observations and near-surface high-altitude environmental monitoring. They are a key choice for routine meteorological sounding missions.

Product Details

1. Weather balloons are primarily made of latex and come with an inflation tube and inflation block. Weather monitoring instruments can be suspended underneath the balloon depending on the intended use.

2. Weather balloons move with the wind and automatically explode when they reach high altitudes. They can be categorized as low-altitude weather balloons, medium-altitude weather balloons and high-altitude weather balloons, and stratospheric weather balloons.

3. Balloons must be filled with hydrogen or helium for launch. Hydrogen is hazardous and is prohibited for use by non-professionals to avoid potential danger.

4. Weather balloons can be equipped with a tow rope, but they can drift significantly in windy conditions.

Weather Balloon Workflow

1. Before use, check whether the ball skin is damaged or aged. The latex is easy to age and needs to be stored away from light to ensure that there is no hidden danger of air leakage during use.

2. Fill the spherical skin with hydrogen (large buoyancy and low cost) or helium (safer, suitable for densely populated areas), adjust the gas inflation amount according to the detection height requirement, and fix a small meteorological detector (including sensors and data transmitters, about 300g) under the spherical skin.

3. After being released from the observation site, the weather balloon rises by buoyancy, and the ball skin gradually expands with the increase of altitude. The relevant detectors collect atmospheric parameters in real time and transmit the relevant data to the ground receiving station by means of radio signals.

4. When it rises to a certain height, the extremely low air pressure at high altitude will make the ball skin expand to the limit and then rupture. The detector mostly falls with gravity (partial distribution of simple parachutes). Due to its degradability, latex fragments do not need special recovery and have little impact on the environment.

FAQ:

Can bad weather release weather balloons?

1、Most bad weather is not recommended, rain, snow, etc. will increase the weight of the balloon, may lead to insufficient buoyancy can not lift off.

2、It can damage the electronic components of the detector and affect data transmission.
